Griffith is a big, diverse and increasingly interesting institution. Established in the early 1970s, Griffith has grown to encompass six campuses stretching from central Brisbane south to the Gold Coast, and has more than 24 000 students and 2500 academic staff. The original campus, Nathan, is southeast of the Brisbane CBD, nestled in the flora and fauna of Toohey Forest and right next door to the Mt Gravatt campus. The Gold Coast campus is another 45 minutes or so south and has grown to the point where some see it becoming a separate university. A still-new campus is Logan, half way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The Griffith University Queensland College of Art, now joined with the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, is housed in a modern purpose-built complex at South Bank that seems to provide every facility that could be wished for.
Many Griffith courses have an international flavour. Business graduates, for example, can get a solid grounding for work in Asia. Developments on the material side of things at Griffith include a community centre (the Eco Centre) at Nathan and a technology precinct at the Gold Coast. Griffith provides scholarships and awards for academic excellence and financial disadvantage. All who undertake overseas study, work or research are eligible for an international experiences scholarship.
